Community initiated Kangaroo Mother CareĀ for low birth weight infants

Published: March 10, 2022

In low- and middle-income countries, babies with low birth weight have a high risk of dying during infancy. In India 25% of babies are born too small.

This project studies whether supporting families to initiate and use Kangaroo Mother Care for small newborns at home can increase survival in the first 6 months of life.

We found that community-initiated Kangaroo Mother Care of small babies increased their survival. Taken together with other evidence synthesized by the World Health Organization, this suggests that such care should be promoted.
